Festival of Sins: Immorality will soon give way to Lust

With two great Christmas shows by Viktoria Modesta and Am-Statik (both photographed here by MarcusT), Festival of Sins ended 2009 on a high. Tony Mitchell reports on December’s Immorality and anticipates an equally impressive night of Lust on February 13

December’s Festival of Sins: Immorality night provided singer Viktoria Modesta with her first audience of fetishists, friends and, perhaps most critical of all, fetishist friends.

But if she was nervous about being judged by her pals and peers, it didn’t show at all in her performance, which was confident, professional, and considerably more impressive than your typical musical performer from the pervy world.

Flanked by a keyboard player and guitarist, and doing live vocals, she delivered her set of self-penned songs like the seasoned pro she probably is, given that, at the age of six, she was already attending performing arts school in Latvia.

Most of her material shared the same, steady, funk underpinnings, over which she delivered sparkly electro-pop vocals. The girl can certainly carry a tune, and she writes tunes that are worth carrying, too.

I was standing next to people who told me they were a lot more impressed than they had expected to be. I mean a lot more. “She could be the new Lady Gaga” they chorused in admiration. I knew what they meant.

If Ms Modesta impressed with her musical prowess, then designer Amy Day showed equal flair in the latex fashion department.

Launching her debut ready-to-wear collection, called Hemera, this Bath-based fashion graduate had assembled a hot troupe of models who were not the usual London faces but looked as if they’d been born to wear her Am-Statik creations.

Every time you think there surely can’t be that anything anyone can come up with in latex that’s genuinely new any more, someone goes and shows you you’re wrong, and tonight it was definitely Am-Statik’s turn to do that.

Her “ethereal-inspired collection with rococo elements and vintage colours” was fresh, exciting, sexy and at the same time very feminine — a sure way to appeal to more than a few latex-loving fashionistas of my acquaintance.

Based on this showing, Am-Statik is definitely a label to watch, and you can expect to see a lot more of Amy Day’s work here at The Fetishistas.

The evening’s second fashion spot from Brighton designer Cherry Gemma was unfortunately cancelled, but the evening’s other performances, including Nara Taylor and Birdseatbaby, helped ensure the variety and quality of entertainment that these sinful gatherings are renowned for.

My only real regret was missing Sammm Agnew’s crucifixion installation, which had already begun, and finished while I was still outside, waiting to be let in. So on this particular occasion, the cross people weren’t just those doing the show inside!
